Athletic Madrid concluded the previous season at the 3rd spot of the Spanish League with a total of 78 points. The team of Diego Simeone managed to score 67 goals in 38 matches which is almost half of what Real Madrid and Barcelona scored.

The main attacking figures of Athletic Madrid are Mario Mandzukic and Antoine Griezmann with both of them scoring a combined total of 34 goals for the Spanish club in their campaign.

Diego Simeone however, wants to increase his attacking options and this is why one of the priorities of the Argentinean coach is to reinforce the offensive department of his squad.

Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain are some of the top summer targets of Diego Simeone but Higuain might just be out of reach as he is rumored to be on the way of joining Arsenal.

Atletico Madrid suffered a major setback in the league title race after a 2-0 defeat against Celta de Vigo.

This was a shock result for the team especially considering that they had beaten table leaders Real Madrid 4-0 only in the previous match. Atletico Madrid expected to build on from this result, which placed them just four points away from the top of the table. As it is, the title looks to be away from them after Barcelona and Real Madrid kept on winning. After the match, manager Diego Simeone says that he was the only person responsible for this defeat.

In their defence, Atletico were without a number of key players like Raul Garcia, Koke, and Turan for this encounter. Garcia and Turan were suspended after receiving five yellow cards so far this campaign, while Koke was absent because of a hamstring injury. The latter has been so much responsible towards creating opportunities in the team and his absence was truly felt against Celta de Vigo, who are struggling with a threat of relegation. Athletic Madrid lost momentum in their quest of staying at the same level and keep on pressuring Real Madrid and Barcelona after losing against Celta de Vigo in the Spanish League in a match that emerged with a very surprising result.

Goals from Nolito and Orellana in the 2nd half were enough for Celta de Vigo to secure their 7th triumph of the season as they overcame Athletic Madrid.

The 29 year old Uruguayan defender Diego Godin believes that even with this defeat, his teammates will not give up and try to get back within reaching distance of their rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.
