Immediate past Spanish La Liga champions Atletico Madrid will start their latest league campaign in the top flight at the home of city rivals Getafe. The target for Atletico Madrid is to wrestle the title from city rivals Real Madrid who are also the reigning European champions. It must be pointed out that Atletico Madrid are third favourites for the La Liga title this season behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone and his players have been given a tricky fixture to start the new season. The two Madrid-based teams will meet on Monday.

Since he became the Atletico Madrid manager, Argentine tactician Simeone has led the club to two Spanish La Liga titles. The first title came during the 2013/14 season, while the second title happened during the penultimate season. Simeone and his players were the reigning champions in La Liga last season before they were displaced by Real Madrid. They ended last season in third spot behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.

In addition to two league titles, Simeone also led Atletico Madrid to two Champions League finals in three seasons. The first Champions League final was in 2014 and he was close to guiding the club to a first Champions League title before Real Madrid denied him. Real Madrid also proved to be his nemesis for his second Champions League final in 2017.

The new Spanish La Liga season has already, but Atletico Madrid will have to wait until Monday to play their first game as revealed earlier. In the first game of the new Spanish La Liga season, Osasuna secured an impressive 2-1 win over Sevilla. Osasuna scored the first goal of the season through Argentine forward Ezequiel Avilain the ninth minute before Rafael Mir scored the Sevilla equaliser two minutes later.
